Client Directed Outcome Informed
The approach I value is referred to as Client Directed & Outcome Informed. Client Directed values you letting me know what you want to get out of therapy, what are your overall goals and what do you want to get out of each session. Outcome Informed refers to the use of regular outcome measures, such as the CORE-OM, to indicate if you ability to cope with distress is improving or not.
I need you to tell me if therapy is working for you or not. If therapy is not working for you, I would appreciate you letting me know and what I can do differently to enable you to get the most out of therapy.
I would like to know:
-
If you felt heard, understood, & respected.
-
If you were able to talk about & work on what you wanted to talk about & work on.
-
If you felt that I was a good fit for you as a therapist.
-
Your overall perception of how the session went for you.

The therapeutic areas that I feel confident working with are:
-
Anxiety (Generalised, Social, Specific Phobias, Panic Attack, & Illness Anxiety)
-
Depression
-
Trauma/PTSD
-
Adult Neurodivergence (ADHD & Autism). I can offer ADHD assessments & diagnoses.
-
Trans, Gender Diverse, & Non-Binary (TGDNB)
-
Sexuality
-
LGBTIQA+ communities
-

"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom"
This quote from Victor Frankl (1909-1997), author of Man's Search for Meaning, emphasises the importance of recognising that behaviours we want to change, can only be changed by allowing ourselves to pause (the space) and reflect on thoughts, feelings, & behaviours, to enable us to make choices to live our lives more consistently with our values.

ABOUT ME
I worked as a secondary teacher in SA schools for over 20 years, mostly in country areas. As a teacher, I became aware of the many social and emotional problems that students face in their development. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are highly common, with research indicating that roughly 37.5% to over 50% of children experience at least one ACE, such as parental separation, economic hardship, & domestic & family violence. Parenting is hard, particularly when parents are not in a good place themselves. The impact of dysfunctional parenting and other adverse childhood experiences do lead to poor mental health in adulthood.

After leaving teaching, I worked as Counsellor in community based organisations and then returned to university to study psychology.

I am a gay man who 'came out' after 20 years of marriage and am therefore very aware, from my own personal experience, of the damage caused to those you love by not being true to yourself.

ALL ABOUT THERAPY
Therapy is about working with clients to help them find ways to improve their mental health and to live a rich and meaningful life. Adverse life experiences, particularly those experienced in childhood, can lead to suffering in adulthood. As a psychologist, I am committed to helping clients find more effective ways to cope with the challenges that they face in their lives.

THERAPEUTIC MODEL
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach that emphasises six core psychological change. People can develop unhelpful ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving and to live better lives, these unhelpful psychological processes need to change. ACT is effective in enabling clients to make the changes they need to develop greater psychological flexibility to cope with life stressors and achieve better mental health. The six core change processes are:
-
Present Moment Awareness (mindfulness).
-
The Observing Self: That part of the self that can observe what's happening in the present moment, internally and externally.
-
Cognitive Defusion: The ability to separate the self from unwanted thoughts, images, & memories.
-
Acceptance of unwanted experiences without struggle.
-
Clarifying Values or knowing what's most important to you in your life.
-
Taking Action to live according to your values.
